Marking the resurrection of their Le Mans dominance, BMW’s decision comes on the heels of their confirmation of participation in the prestigious IMSA Sportscar Championship in 2023 and the World Endurance Championship in 2024.
Frank van Meel, the CEO of BMW’s esteemed M division, passionately shared insights about the ground-breaking car, stating, “Our paramount goal was to create a prototype that unmistakably embodies the essence of a BMW M Motorsport vehicle.
I assure all our fans that a single glance at the BMW M Hybrid V8 is all it takes to recognize its true BMW pedigree.”
In an exhilarating showdown, the BMW M Hybrid will vie for supremacy against formidable rivals like Acura, Cadillac, and Porsche in IMSA’s dynamic GTP category, starting in 2023.
Joining the ranks in 2024 will be Alpine and Lamborghini, promising an electrifying spectacle on the track. Setting the BMW apart in terms of design are unmistakable features drawn from the illustrious lineup of BMW M road cars.
This includes the imposing kidney grilles, twin headlight strips, a sculpted bonnet reminiscent of the current M3, ‘M Hook’ mirrors, and even a distinctive window graphic showcasing the iconic Hofmeister kink.
The eye-catching camouflage pays homage to BMW’s rich racing heritage in North America, featuring images of legendary BMW race cars such as the 1976 BMW 3.0 CSL, the 1981 BMW M1/C, the 1978 BMW 320i Turbo, the 1986 BMW GTP, the BMW M3 E36 GTS-2, the BMW Z4 GTLM, and the BMW M8 GTE.
Notably, the bonnet proudly sports the ’50 Jahre BMW M’ graphic, celebrating the 50th anniversary of BMW M division in 2022.
Under the hood, the BMW M Hybrid boasts a cutting-edge hybrid system, seamlessly integrating a potent 49bhp electric motor with an Xtrac gearbox. Powering this remarkable machine is a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine, derived from the upcoming XM model, meticulously tuned to deliver 670bhp to meet the stringent LMDh regulations.
Collaborating with Italian manufacturer Dallara for the chassis, BMW is poised to make a resounding statement on the track, much like its counterpart, Cadillac.
