BYD Announces Plans to Establish Electric Car Manufacturing Plant in Indonesia by 2026

BYD, the renowned Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled its ambitious strategy to set up an electric car factory in Indonesia.
The company has finalized the acquisition of a 100-hectare plot of land located in the Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Area in West Java, signaling its commitment to expanding its global footprint. Construction of the facility is slated to commence this year, with operations expected to commence by January 2026.

While specific details regarding production capacity are yet to be disclosed by BYD, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, revealed projections of manufacturing up to 150,000 electric vehicles annually.

Additionally, BYD is poised to invest approximately 1.3 billion US dollars into this endeavor, underlining its dedication to fostering sustainable mobility solutions in the region. This announcement comes on the heels of BYD’s successful market entry into Indonesia earlier this year.

The upcoming facility in Indonesia will mark BYD’s fifth electric car factory established outside of China, following successful ventures in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Hungary.
However, BYD’s global expansion efforts have encountered challenges, with reports surfacing last week indicating the complexities associated with replicating its domestic success on an international scale.

Currently, exports constitute a mere eight percent of BYD’s total sales. Nonetheless, the company remains steadfast in its goal to export over 500,000 electric vehicles in the current year and expand this figure to one million by 2025, underscoring its unwavering commitment to driving the global transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.
